She described her son as "special" and told Sawyers: "You have not only killed Dontae, you have destroyed and broken the lives of all the people involved with him, none more so than his family. He will spend 12 months in detention then another year under supervision with restrictions in place and a requirement to undertake training.ĭuring Sawyers' sentencing, Dontae's mother Niquae read an emotional statement on the impact that her son's death has created. He added: "The facts about you which I have in mind are that you do have education difficulties. But judge Blair told him: "It was ridiculous to suggest to the jury that you did not challenge Dontae Davis to fight that day and put forward the ridiculous idea that the road you took was to your friends house."
Sawyers said in the seconds that followed he tumbled from the alley, dropped his knife and retrieved it, and swung twice at Dontae in self-defence. He said he ran into an alley leading to Hayes Close, he was stabbed, and he dropped his phone. Sawyers denied inviting him to fight, but said that as he walked away he looked behind him and saw Dontae with a knife. Sawyers said on the day of the tragic death he bumped into Dontae, who he spoke to before he walked away. Dontae's friend, a 17-year-old youth, had an unused large knife which he discarded before he was arrested. The court also heard Dontae had a knife in his jacket pocket that he had used in the fight. He said the large knife he was carrying was for self defence. During the trial, Sawyers told the court that he did not start the fight on the day Dontae was killed.
This is the second or third death which has resulted from knife violence." But passing the sentence, Judge Blair QC told Sawyers: "This city has had enough of the violence between young people affiliated with the 16 and 24 groups. Sawyers was charged with murder following the incident but was found not guilty of the allegation, and told the jury that he acted in self defence and that he was the victim of a stabbing.
The court heard that the fatal stabbing occurred after a knife fight in an alley between youths from rival groups - the 16s and 24s - at around 6.20pm on October 14. Sawyers, 19, of Ewell Road, Whitchurch, was given nine years in a young offenders institute for his manslaughter conviction and a concurrent 12 months for his possession of a bladed article. The teenager was found guilty of manslaughter today (April 26) for his involvement in the death of 18-year-old Dontae, who died following a stab wound in October 2021.
